The Cotopaxi volcano is located in the Andes mountains, about 50 km south of the city of Quito. It reaches a height of 5.897 meters, representing the second-highest volcano in Ecuador and one of the highest in the entire world. The activity of this volcano has been tracked since 1738, having more than 50 eruptions to this date. The last one occurred in August 2015 and kept active for almost a year. Ecuadorian authorities closed access to the area until 2017 with a great reopening.
You can appreciate Cotopaxi from Quito on a clear day – is astonishing! The first European who tried climbing, but failed in the attempt, was Alexander Von Humboldt in 1802. Are you ready to try it yourself?
